After spending more than 10 years as a side project of a group of friends playing 70s-inspired hard rock and proto-metal, GREENLEAF has finally emerged as a band in its own right. Led by guitarist Tommi Holappa, co-founder of DOZER, a pioneering European desert rock band, GREENLEAF went through various lineups during its early years, featuring members from LOWRIDER, TRUCKFIGHTERS, DEMON CLEANER, and DOZER. But after five albums and twice as many lineup changes, Tommi began to feel that GREENLEAF could be something more.

 

Its evolution from a simple side project into a full-fledged band began when Tommi contacted Arvid Hällagård in 2013 to ask him to sing on a new track. Arvid’s first stoner rock band, GIANT SPACE CRUISER, had played with DOZER a few years earlier, and Tommi had kept an eye on the charismatic singer. With drummer Sebastian Olsson—who started out as a stand-in but would go on to become GREENLEAF’s second-longest-serving member after Tommi—they worked on one track, then another, with Arvid bringing a vocal direction unlike anything the project had experienced before. The feeling that things had changed was immediately apparent, and what they were creating was a full-fledged album.

 

 

Today, Greenleaf is widely recognized as a must-see live act and one of the most prolific and captivating bands to emerge from the European underground heavy rock scene. With four albums to their credit, marked by powerful and mesmerizing rock riffs since they formed as a proper band, they continue to push the boundaries of desert-inspired rock with each new release and set increasingly massive stages ablaze year after year.
